If you use Firefox or Chrome, there are free, safe extensions / add-ons that can add a download button to the YouTube page that will let you download the video in a variety of resolutions and save it to your hard drive.
Firefox users: Add on
This is a simple download and install. After installation, when you go to YouTube, you will see the word "Download" with a down arrow to click on.
Chrome users: Add-on
When you click on the link, you will need to do a manual install, but the directions are step-by-step.
